Back in November when asked whether he was in the running to direct the new Star Wars reboot, sci-fi genius JJ Abrams responded with, “I am looking forward more than anyone to the next iterations of Star Wars, but I believe I will be going as a paying moviegoer!” However, it has now been confirmed by LucasFilm and Disney that Abrams WILL direct Star Wars Episode VII. What an interesting turn of events!
Ever since the announcement of the director, the script, written by Little Miss Sunshine and Toy Story 3 writer Michael Arndt has been kept securely away from any wandering eyes. It has been noted that Arndt is a lifelong Star Wars fan who lectures on the script of the 1977 original film as a great peice of narrative storytelling. Making him perfect for the role.
The officical announcement arrived Friday night in a statement by executive producer Kathleen Kennedy, “It’s very exciting to have JJ aboard leading the charge as we set off to make a new Star Wars movie. JJ is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience, and will bring that talent to create an unforgettable motion picture.”
Overlord George Lucas continued with, “I’ve consistently been impressed with JJ as a filmmaker and storyteller. He’s an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn’t be in better hands.”
Looks like Mr Abrams has his work cut out for him. But is he really the best choice?
