Hold the press – Danny Boyle is looking to make a sequel to 1996′s Trainspotting for 2016 release, reuniting all original cast members.

In an interview with The Playlist, the Academy Award winning director put it out it there and explained: “This has been a long time coming.  There’s always been this long term plan for Transpotting 2, if John [Hodge] can produce a decent enough script.”

Shock, shock, horror, horror.  Originally a novel written by Irvine Welsh, when Boyle transformed the story into film it soon become cult classic.  With 2016 an “ideal” release date this would also mark it’s 20th anniversary.

Boyle also felt there would be “no barriers” to getting the original cast on board (Ewan McGregor, Ewan Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller, Robert Carlyle, Kevin McKidd and Kelly Macdonald.)

Writer Welsh did publish a sequel to Trainspotting, titled Porno, which sees characters Renton, Sick Boy Begbie and Spud mixed up in a scheme to make some money from making a pornographic movie.  However, Boyle previously described Porno “not a great book in the way Trainspotting, the original novel, is geniunely a masterpiece.”

Although he did clarify the sequel would be “loosely fitted” on the book and author Welsh would have to be involved.

Boyle’s comments also suggests he’s made up with McGregor after their public falling out over The Beach, where Leonardo DiCaprio was cast lead in the film, instead of McGregor.  McGregor told the Times more than a decade later: “They absolutely made me think that I was playing the character in The Beach all the while they were keeping me there just in case Leonardo pulled out – which is really nasty.”

Ouch, although the sequel could still be on track as it seems there’s no hard feelings when McGregor told the Daily Record in January this year: “I would always read [a sequel script] if I was sent it.“
