Lady Leshurr has been one of the stand out artists in the underground scene this year with her ‘Look At Me Now‘ remix smashing the 100,000 views barrier, her mixtape being a success both here and in the US aswell as being named in The Guardian’s band of the day.
Lady Leshurr has all the ingredients needed to be a mainstream hit, she is beautiful, can rap, sing, write, dance, act and has charisma.
Her debut single ‘Lego‘ is due out on Monday 21st November, and with plenty of radio play expected we can’t see anything but great things to come for this Birmingham bombshell.
We caught up with Lady Leshurr for an exclusive chat which you can read below.
HTF: Hi Lady Leshurr, thanks for taking the time out to speak to us here at Hit The Floor, how are you?
Lady Leshurr: I’m really well thanks!
HTF: Your debut single, ‘Lego’, is due out on November 21st for those that have not heard it yet, how would you describe it?
Lady Leshurr: It’s a really fun play about and energetic track really.
HTF: What has the reaction been by your fans and peers alike?
Lady Leshurr: It’s kind of mixed, the majority really like it. Especially people that liked me before the ‘look at me now’ remix, they really like it when I do fast. Some people think I’m trying to be Nicky Minaj on the track which confuses me as I don’t think she even spits that fast. It’s kind of mixed messages but the majority do love it though and the video, which is great.
HTF: A lot of people compare your style to that of Busta Rhymes, how do you feel when you hear this?
Lady Leshurr: I think it’s only because I spit fast why people do that so I’m always going to get that comparison I guess. It’s definitely a compliment but people need to see that is more than spitting fast, its different, Busta Rhymes, Twista… a lot of people spit fast, but it’s the content and the delivery as well.
HTF: You’ve been in the industry a long time, yet the last year has seen you really blow up. Your rendition of Chris Brown’s ‘Look at me now’ really got the scene talking, why do you think this caught peoples attention?
Lady Leshurr: I think it’s because no one expected me to do it, I’m a little girl, well people think I am haha! I think people didn’t think I could spit that fast, that was probably the first track I spat fast on. I’ve always been able to do it since I was young but people seeing me do that was a bit like ‘oh my gosh didn’t think she could do that’. I also took on three characters on that track and the video was great so think it shocked people that I did that.
HTF: Let’s talk about your fans, for anybody that doesn’t already know, you always have time for them. This could be through tweeting them, running competitions, phoning them or meeting up at Nando’s, how important is it to have this bond?
Lady Leshurr: It’s so important. A lot of artists don’t understand how important it is. I just love it, it’s not something for people to say oh she does this and that. I genuinely love speaking to people who listen to my music, I want to know what they like about me and I’m just happy that they have the time to tweet me. They always tweet nice stuff so I might as well give back to them and tweet back, it’s not hard is it? I like to run competitions and give stuff away, like when I went Nando’s and met up with 3 people and just had a good time chatting and stuff. It was really fun.
HTF: If there is one person that you love, Lil Wayne would surely pop up! Can you tell us about your fascination with him.
Lady Leshurr: He’s just amazing. Amazing! He really really inspires me in so many ways, his lyrical content, delivery, sense of humour, personality it all shines through on the track. It makes me do things that I would never think to do, you know, he approaches tracks in different ways. He says things that are so funny. So now I do things and say things that are funny, it attracts people in a different way and it stands out …its really cool. He really inspires me.
HTF: Other than Mr Wayne, which other artists do you like to listen to?
Lady Leshurr: I listen to Drake a bit, but it is mainly Lil Wayne. I can only listen to one artist at a time really.
HTF We understand that you now have your own clothing range! Tell us more and what we can expect from it going forward.
Lady Leshurr: It was basically just to launch off my mixtape really. It went way bigger than I thought it would, it had the look at me now remix on it. Americans and stuff downloaded it, I think it got over 20,000 downloads in 2 weeks, it did so well so I thought I would make the most out of it and do some merchandise out of it. It did really good, got some t shirts and bracelets and stuff. Think I’m going to do it this time as well with Lego!
HTF: With music and fashion taking up most of your time, how do you unwind?
Lady Leshurr: It’s just music, if I’m not making music I’m listening to it, so I don’t really have time to do anything else. I like to play cards every now and then! I’m a gambler! I’ve been doing it since I was 8 so I’m quite good.
HTF: What are the plans for the next year, and where can we catch you live?
Lady Leshurr: Well I’m supporting Jessie J and Kelly Rowland this year in December in Brixton, and I’m supporting Bone Thugs n Harmony on the 24th December. There’s also a launch party for Lego in London too soon, not sure about the venue yet though.
HTF: Thanks for taking the time to talk to us, Good Luck with the single release, is there anything else you would like to add?
Lady Leshurr: If you like the tune, go and support the cause! Thanks!
