Interview: Lex Jones & The Space Tourist Part II (Video) (HTF Exclusive)

HTF caught up with the fantastic Lex Jones. Most of you would remember Lex as being a former winner King of The Mic. Since then he’s pushed boundaries and we spoke to about the festive season and his brand new music video series, ‘The Space Tourist’.

HTF: Hey Lex, thanks for spending some time with us here at HTF. First off how are you?

LJ: Alright…..Man…..just tryna stay balanced in the Christmas madness

HTF: for those thatdon’t yet know you, can you introduce yourself?

LJ: Yh man. I’m Lex Jones. I’m from Burbs. Im a former King of The Mic Champion. Among other things I make Cine-grime a cross between Grime/Cinematic Music and Pop. hello

HTF: So tell us about your new project The Space Tourist?

LJ: It’s the tale of Mr JJ, an isolated and forgotten elderly man who has spent his entire life building a dream-fuelled spaceship out of rubbish with the hope of leaving humanity behind and escaping to the Moon. It’s got four parts to it an the second drops Early 2013. I guess you could say it’s got a mournful tone, but it’s always felt happy to me

HTF: What was the inspiration behind the project?

LJ: I don’t really know. I just thought it would be fun to work with animation and not worry about limitations visually. Hauschka’s music just spoke of an existence to me, so I ran with it.

HTF: What made you use them type of visuals in your video?

LJ: I wanted the environment to seem extremely bleak but childlike. Jay Jay’s plan is so implausible it had to feel childish to make any sense to me.

HTF: When is the next part out and how does it continue the story?

LJ: The Next Part is out New Years Day. Its called Blast. It’s a bit more up tempo than part 1 and more humerous. Barrington the tortoise is in it too.

HTF: Do you think you’d make other projects similar to The Space Tourist?

LJ: Im not writing it off. My next project though is ‘The Moirae’. That’s also a narrative piece but is a little more true to life. Not that I’ve ever tried to capture my dreams to be able to confidently dismiss it as alternative to petroleum. In the new year though you will get to see more of me just going in as well as narrative work.☺

HTF: When you’re not working on your own music, who do you listen to?

LJ: Boards of Canada /ASAP/ Evian Christ . I also like Japanese pop and jazz. Getting to Tech House a lot too atm.

HTF: What track have you got on repeat at the moment?

LJ: Joey Badass – Funky ho

HTF: We are currently in the festive season and despite all the rush is meant to be the time to chill, what do you do to relax?

LJ: Umm. Watch my Malawi Cichlid Aquarium or massacre on red dead.

HTF: As 2012 is coming to an end, what has been your highlight?

LJ: Probably the world not ending so I could irriate conspiracy mandem…..

HTF: Was there anything else you wanted to add Lex?
