Fruitbag and Johnny Rich Leave The King Blues!

Mike (Fruitbag) and Johnny Rich have officially left the King Blues. A full statement was given by them on the forums of Punktastic.com which you can read below

Why I Left The King Blues (Mike)

I said it wasn’t an easy decision to leave the band at the time but, it really was. I’d simply had enough of being treated like a second class citizen, I’ve never felt that low or been spoken to with such distain before. I was depressed and on the brink of a nervous breakdown. I was made to feel unwanted, useless, unappreciated.

I was in the King Blues for 5 years, we’d been friends for years and we were making music with pure hearts and good intentions. As soon as we signed the record deal with Universal, everything changed. I was naïve to think that my friends would remain friends. The first year wasn’t too bad, but after the release of “Save the World, Get the Girl”, certain people realised how much money there was to be made, and the whole agenda changed. Making music that was original and inspiring wasn’t a priority anymore. We had made music that would sell, make money and get played on the radio. Our beliefs about equality and peace became publicity stunts. Anything about the bands character that we thought could sell, we sold.

I was no longer in a band with my friends, they became my bosses. They had no respect for me and wanted to control every aspect of my life. If I went on holiday, I was a slacker, if I wanted to get everyone together for a night out, I was a slacker. If I wasn’t “working” for them for just a minute, I was a slacker. And when it came to writing the third album, I couldn’t win. Everything I wrote Itch didn’t like, I offered to go to his every day for a week so we could jam and write together but he didn’t want to, Jamie spent a little time writing with me, but also said that he had his own songs to work on and “shouldn’t have to hold my hand”. Silly me for thinking that bands should write music together and attempt to work as a unit. But after making “Save the World…” and they saw just how much money you get for writing the music, it was like everyone was in it for themselves.

I’ll admit, I’m not the brightest guy around and I’m not particularly good at writing music, but when it comes to learning music, keeping time, rhythm, and performing, I’m pretty competent. And I love being on tour, it made being treated like shit worth it. It didn’t matter if I was tired or ill, I always hauled my arse on stage and played with all my heart.

In November I was so sick (not just fed up, but close to a complete mental breakdown), from threats and abusive phone calls from Itch that I asked to be taken off the contract which meant that I didn‘t get a monthly wage anymore (£750). I thought it would straighten things out and we would all get on better as they wouldn’t have a hold over me anymore. I got some manual labour work from a friend for 3 days at the end of November – and I got screwed at because I should still have been “working” for them, it didn’t matter that if I didn’t do those 3 days work I wouldn’t be able to keep a roof over my head.

I got a bar job shortly after as it was flexible for touring and paid my rent, just after my second weeks rota was written I was told that I couldn’t work that week because we had to go to Devon to record. I couldn’t give just 4 days notice to a job I just got and tried to explain but they couldn’t see how it was an unreasonable request and they came to the conclusion that I just didn’t care about the band or the recording. I did care, but I also had to care about keeping a roof over my head. It was being made financially impossible for me to stay in the band and I was so sick of being treated like shit anyway I just didn’t see the point.

In the space of 2 days, John, Jim, Al and I, all left for pretty much the same reasons. And I have to say now that they are all exceptional musicians and they weren’t always in the pictures but, they were just as important as anyone else in that band. It’s hard to perform with someone preaching about equality, peace, tolerance and social harmony. when backstage he couldn’t care less about the people at the bottom of the heap, as long as you’re making him a star and making him money.

There will probably be some well worded retaliation to this – perhaps some kind of “I was under so much pressure from the label I didn’t realise I was becoming the embodiment of everything I hate”, or “it’s all lies, he’s just bitter because he wasn’t good enough”, or “he‘s playing the victim“, or “he‘s using us as a scapegoat“, or “fair play, I’m all for free speech” or perhaps a dignified silence, they really are an amazingly manipulative pair.

Please know I didn’t write this to be petty, it’s just the truth. I hate the fact that people are saying I left because I got a girlfriend and a flat and settled down. I’ve had all of those things for over 3 years, no matter what people may think it didn’t change a thing and I know it’s a pretty harsh thing to say but, before everything, the band was always the most important thing to me. I left because I hated the segregation and hierarchy in the band and the lack of respect for me as a person. I’m not saying we all should have had the same money etc., if you work hard and earn money then good on you, but that doesn’t make you better than anyone and it doesn’t give you the right to treat people like shit.

To be honest, I wish there had never been a contract, no record label, no greed and no egos. I wish we had just stuck to things like playing outside the Good Mixer in Camden, having a laugh and being honest with ourselves. I might not have a lot of money and no more guest list for festivals and shows, but I have a great family, great friends, my guitar and a good heart and that‘s enough for me.

All the best,

Mike (no more Fruitbag)

Why Johnny Rich Left The Band:

I was asked to prepare a statement on my depearture from The King Blues but so far they have failed to even acknowledge that I have left. No surprise really given that my exsistance as a member of the band was never acknowledged in the first place.

For anyone who cares here it is again:

By the end of last year, playing in the king blues had become a lot like being in a bad relationship. It was full of deceit, mistrust and dishonesty with on communication. Like all bad relationships there comes a time when it’s best just to get out. In the words of the stray cats :”I got a low down dirty feeling…

the king blues – turning rebellion into money since 2001

It's a shame. I love Itch, but I hope he wakes up soon. I love the King Blues, very few weeks go by that I don't listen to Under The Fog. It seems like Fruitbag and Johnny had to do what they had to do.

Wont be paying The King Blues any more of my attention-got no time for hypocrites.
Have travelled to see them in the past-but Itch has totally let himself down.Shame dude, shame.

it's so sad when people let money and greed get the better of them
the king blues were my favourite band,
but now 'headbutt' is awful and totally uninspiring.
oh well, good luck to the old band members who kept their heads on the ground x

i knew it! they were my fav band too a long time ago but i never liked how they changed after joining the major record label. glad friutbag and johnny got out. x

:( I remember the days of sharing a beer with the band before or after a gig, all changed after that stupid record label, the music went downhill as well. well done fruitbag and johnny for saying it how it is. XX

Before making a judgement I’d like to hear both sides of the story, I try to be as fair as possible. However, if this is true and Itch has turned into an a-hole, I’m really disappointed. The King Blues had something great, the political motivation combined with the ska and punk influences embodied pretty much everything I love about music. Not only has the quality of the music gone downhill, but they’ve lost the message too. What a shame.

    • olly

I know this message is over a year old, but I habe to say something. How in the fuck have they lost the message? with songs like we are fucking angry, shooting fascists, does anybody care about us, set the world on fire. Great songs with a fucking message. Not to mention itch’s poetry is awesome. Fruitbag was the dick, He was so messed on coke he could barely play some shows

      • George.

At the point of him leaving this comment, these songs had not been released. Maybe if you listened to something other than their newest album you would know.

  • big a

i saw this comeing since i herd headbutt im really pleased for mike and jonny that thay find happyness not in money but in the things that count and as for itch…. its just like what happend with the clash… watch viva jo strummer ull understand what im saying

  • james

fuck, in all honesty, the majority of people now think the king blues have sold out and stuff, but hardly anybody gives them the chance to see them live. me and my mate went to see the king blues in bournmouth recently and where shocked when we couldnt see fruit bag. its fucking mad, succes have got to thier heads a bit, there playing in bigger venues and making bigger albums and nothing compares to seeing the king blues in yeovil with anti flag. Thier music lyrics still have a bit of soul in them and artsists do need to progress but not loose heart, i just wanna hear the new album because ive got a 100% trust in them but its mad how you guys all fell out i think jamie and itch are in shock by how much money they’re reeling in and soon its gonna hit them they’ve lost thier best mates doing it and will hopefully return to grass roots and just being a genuine band but they’ve got to have thier phase and soon they’ll hopefully go back to being a genuine band that gets the crowd fucking rowdy and inspiring people again because without the king blues i would have never got into politics and realiseed that “you got the right, stand up and fight, see something wrong, join us in song”

  • Anomynous

Hats off to Jonny and Mike. Its so sad to see this happen to such a great band that originally developed a strong underground following around the UK for a good reason. I first started going to King Blues gigs around London back in the Under the Fog days, and back then the band seemed like the incredibly original result of honest experimentation; with the tightness of a samba band, which made them a great addition to all those anti-war marches. However, when you listen to the tunes they’re producing now, it even sounds as if something has gone wrong in the chemistry behind the scenes. The new single ‘Headbutt’ is sloppy, lazily written crap; it almost like the record company moguls are trying to manufacture a ‘poppy Green Day out of East London’ sort of thing. What the hell were they thinking about whent they brought in the synth?

  • mab

I read the reply from itch to this on their facebook.
I also saw the amount of teenie bopper who liked the comment who i doubt know who fruitbag and johnny are.

Such a hipercrtical statement these guys make now, such a shame.
We shared a beer with them years back at boardmasters..

I’m surprised they haven’t ased security to follow them round yet.

  • Youallsuckatlife

All you people whining like little bitches do my head in. As for fagbag, go on about “heart” and whatever else you want but you have zero talent.

As for people going on about how the band used to have a political agenda, they never did they just spouted the same unthoughtout crap that any infant could think up.

I liked a few of their songs but after hearing their retarded chants at a concert I realised they were made for low IQ people who think anyone cares about their opinion.

Itch was a nice fella when I met him but making him out to be anything other than a wannabe is far FAR from accurate.

King blues are an amazing band. Obviously If you leave a band you’re not going to sing the praises of the guys you left. Good luck to the both of you… Every single member of the band past and present has made my day in shitty England a little bit better… Be proud of what you started.

I am 30 and knew Itch since I was 15. He is and has always been the most self-appreciating, self-centered person with absolutely no problem with stabbing people in the back to protect his own image. He is a liar, a cheat and overall a morally defunct individual.
There are no excuses for the things I have seen that guy do to people and indeed what he was prepared to do to me to protect himself.
I have to say I was very happy when someone else exposed Itch for the nasty, pro-actively horrible little turd that he is.

  • JBeez

The King Blues are utter shite, those that have left have done themselves a favour. The singer and the fat twat who plays guitar for them are bellends, basically wannabe popstars who don’t have any real talent. Maybe I’m being too harsh, but fuck ‘em.
